The Coach has asked me to post this preliminary itinerary for the 2012 Annual Golf and Dinner October 11 to 13 hilighting some of the planned activities that will make this event extra special.
Thursday October 11...The Olympic View Golf Course has been booked for play for those participants that will arrive early and want an extra day of golf and fun. Let the Coach know if you plan to play on Thursday and with whom.
Thursday Evening Food and Fun...This is a real hilight that takes place at the Executive Inn Hotel Penthouse (top floor). The food is fantastic with Coach and Friends doing the cooking. Get to meet all the other participants, enjoy the food and spectacular view.
Friday October 12..Breakfast will be served (7:30-9:00am) in the morning before all the golfers head out to the Bear Mountain Golf Course for the shamble golf team competition. Golf will start around 10:30 at Bear Mountain. Friday Evening...is hospitality night in the Governers Room at the Executive Inn where you can have a drink and brag about how great you played at Bear Mountain.
Saturday the 13th...again breakfast will be served to those who wish to get up before 9:00 am and the day is set aside for leisure activity of your choice. Some go to Mount Doug for 9 holes of golf, some do the whale watching others may just like to sleep in and then take in downtown Victoria.
Saturday Evening...The bus will leave Executive House around 5:00pm to hit cocktail hour at 5:30 at Olympic View Golf Course. During the cocktail hour presentation will be made for both Team and Individual competitions. The winning provincial/state team will be announced and have bragging right for 2012. The Coach and Friends Dinner will then start around 7:00pm.
So there you have it. Again this is just preliminary so more details will be added as we get closer to the Event. However, at first glance it sure looks like a lot of fun.

Shamble Format and Team Play For Bear Mountain
Some great news from the tournament committee for a proposed new format and team competition for our annual Bear Mountain Coach and Friends Golf Tournament on Friday October 12, 2012. To make the event even more fun and interesting the committee is proposing the following changes:
Shamble Format
Most everyone has played the scramble format well the shamble is even easier. In a shamble everyone hits from the tee and the best ball from the tee is selected by the team and everyone plays their second shot from that spot and then each individual continues to play out their ball from then on. What this means is that everyone will be able to play their second shot from a good spot and it will speed up the game while lowering individual scores. Every ones score is kept by the captain of the team/foursome for the team and individual competition.
Provincial/State Teams
Everyone who is playing in the Tournament will be asked to play for their province/state of their choice. For example, you may live in Alberta but your roots may be with Manitoba and you may choose to play for Team Manitoba. Although you may choose to play for Team Manitoba it does not mean you have to play in a foursome will all Manitoba golfers, you can still play in a foursome of friends. It just means that your score may be counted with the Team you choose to play for. Right now Team Florida, Team Ontario and Team Manitoba look like front runners. Some of the Teams are choosing provincial/state colors in terms of hats or shirts and we suggest that each golfer wear something related to the Team he/she chooses to play for. Some golfers have already volunteered to Captain a team and will be named later.
At the reception, just before the Dinner on Saturday nite, the Provincial/State Winners will be announced and will have bragging rights for 2012. Anyway we hope that this Team competition with the Shamble format becomes an eagerly contested annual event. Right now my money is on Team Ontario but Team Florida looks strong.

The Albatross Ball of Louis Oosthuizen
Both Dennis and Henry sent me this update:
OK, what happened to the famed “albatross” ball of Louis Oosthuizen that he tossed into the gallery surrounding the second hole at the Masters on Sunday? Well, as you have probably seen or read, it was caught by Wayne Mitchell, 59, of New Tripoli, PA which is outside Allentown. Vice-President of Air Products, Mitchell and his wife were tournament guests of an executive of Dow Chemical in Midland, Michigan. Along the rope line, they had been seated at the par-five second hole since 10:00 a.m., patiently waiting over four hours for the leaders to come through.
After he caught the ball and placed it into his pocket, Mitchell was later escorted by security and Augusta National members to Butler Cabin where he met Billy Payne, Augusta National’s Chairman. As reported by several news outlets, including the Augusta Chronicle and The Morning Call, Mitchell’s local newspaper in Bethlehem, PA, Mitchell gave the ball to the club for its archives located in the Trophy Room which includes the ball Gene Sarazen holed out with for his iconic double eagle in 1935.
As quoted in The Morning Call earlier this week, Mitchell said: “I'm not a souvenir-grabber. For me, the ball clearly represented a special moment in history. Now, it's in the hands of the club, where it belongs." Mitchell and the club declined to discuss details on the actual transaction.
However, I’ve learned from a reliable source that in exchange for the ball Mitchell was offered two Lifetime Passes to the Masters. Before happily accepting, Mitchell also asked Payne for one other request: the opportunity to play Augusta National. Payne said that could be arranged.
That’s what I call a great catch: Lifetime passes to the Masters topped off by a memorable round at Augusta National. So next year don’t be surprised to see patrons with catcher’s mitts.

The Great Northlands Challenge 2012
Each Spring when the Coach first arrives in Vancouver it is time for the Northlands Golf Challenge.
The competition is a best ball match play format with Coach and Hugh Forster taking on Hal McInerney and Wes Hadikin.
Last year the Coach and Hugh were victorious in winning the Challenge with Coach posting an incredible par 71 on the tough Northlands layout and beating Hal and Wes one up with one to play. However, for 2012 Hal and Wes were ready and out for revenge. When the dust settled on April 14, 2012 both Hal and Wes each shot their best scores ever of 72 recording a best ball 5 under score and beating Coach and Hugh 2 up with 2 to play. The victory was sweet revenge and the beer and burgers tasted just that much better.
There is already trash talking going on about the 2013 Northlands Challenge but for this year Hal and Wes will enjoy well deserved bragging rights.

24 Laws of Golf
Dennis Halabecki sent me the following 24 Laws of Golf that seem so true, here are the first 12 Laws with more to come:

Friends of Coach Giving Back
This morning I got a call from one of Coach's friends who loves golf but also loves helping others. This is Doug's story about helping others he wishes to share with Coach and Friends.
I was talking to Lloyd, and told him briefly about our trip to Guatemala. Ten of us from Bonavista Baptist Church travelled to Guatemala on March 3, and returned March 11. We built eight houses for local families identified with a need for “help”. We work under the “Arms of Jesus”, an organization based in Pickering Ontario.
The local Arms of Jesus school in Parramos, Guatemala is schooling 500 kids, and helping in whatever capacity in the local area. We also painted a section of the school, and in addition helped pour a slab of cement for four additional classrooms. (the old fashion way, I may add)
